The great news was broken by ­Bravissimo, a lingerie label for larger sized breasts, who last week announced the arrival of the L-cup bra. The firm revealed that the KK cup, which was launched just two years ago, has been deemed too small by many customers.

So they’ve had to come up with an even bigger one.

According to Bravissimo the unprecedented demand for the L-cup can be explained, in part, by the fact that for years women have worn bras that were too big in the back and too small in the cup. So as more women go for comfort and shape, they are buying a bigger bra.

So what’s the cause of this. Well, some say it’s simply a question of women getting larger all round. Professor Michael Baum, an expert in breast cancer, says: ‘Fat is laid down on breasts as much as thighs or bottoms. We are experiencing an obesity ­epidemic, so the increase in women’s measurements isn’t that surprising.’

But others have a different view.

Dr Marilyn Glenville, a nutritionist ­specialising in women’s health and hormones, thinks its down to hormones. ‘We have to look at what stimulates breast tissue growth — and that’s oestrogen, the female sex hormone. ­Oestrogen is what changes our body shape during puberty.’

There’s also the rise in the number of breast enhancing supplements available at chemists.
