“The world’s gone mad.” Those were, of course, the now famous words of Sky News presenter Richard Keys during the course of his now notorious conversation with his colleague Andy Gray before this weekend’s football match between Wolves and Liverpool. And indeed the world has gone mad since they were uttered. But not in the way Keys meant. The two men were, as the world knows, talking about the fact that there was a female linesman officiating at the game. They objected to this and made a string of sexist remarks about her not knowing the offside rule and basically being unfit to run the touchline. The furore this has caused has now lost Gray his £1.7 million a year job. Keys’ position is, apparently, also hanging by a thread. It has also begun to dominate every news channel and bulletin as well as the front and back pages of our national newspapers. What the f*** is going on? Now, I know the pair of them are prize pillocks. And I know that the lineswoman Sian Massey doesn’t deserve that kind of treatment. But what gets me is the amount of newsprint and air time wasted on the ‘debate’ about the issues they have raised. We are in the middle of a double dip recession, as new figures revealed today. Yesterday in Moscow a suicide bomber blew up 35 people at the international airport. Today, four kids died in a horrendous house fire in Derbyshire. And we are spending our time anaylsing whether a pair of old farts said something sexist when they were off air. Yes, the world has gone mad. |
